Quote from: Redzone on Nov 24, 2025, 05:36 PMI read where Mater Dei's 3*  overrated QB Ryan Hopkins ran a 10.66 100 Meters this year ........ that's very fast.

Does Mater Dei even use any of that speed?

Maybe he should run Track then because he can't pass.... 🤣

Quote from: Redzone on Nov 24, 2025, 05:57 PMWhat I can tell you is he had 500 Yards rushing and 8 rushing TDs at JSerra Catholic last year.

JSerra.... 🤣.... Didn't they just fire their Coach because they stink?.... 🤣🤣

San Diego Open Championship tonight, Carlsbad Leads SDCC 10-0 at half and starts with the Ball....

SDCC had 6 penalties called on them on 1 drive Negating a long run and 2 TD's.... Then they had 1st and goal on the 1, 2 penalties later they are on the 10 and QB throws a Pick in the End Zone.... 🤣

SDCC with 2 turnovers is shooting themselves in the foot, but Carlsbad has some nice players, Athletic lineman with good size and their QB looks good!.... Should be a great second half....

Glad to hear it!.... Maybe he can stick to Track then because he can't pass.... A Completion percentage in the 50's in High school is terrible.... Especially at MD.... He has no touch on the ball, and only 16 TD passes with 2 of the Top WR's in the Country and a Top TE in the country.... He had a worse year than your Buddy Arch Manning.... 🤣

Some of the people here bashing Raul Lara need to remember one thing:  the internet is forever (i.e., prepgridiron.com may be dead, but it's still online).

Some of these "I never thought he was a good coach" comments were "Great hire!" about a year and a half ago.

HA!... If one of them was me the my bad!.... I can't remember what I said a year and a half ago because I have had too many Pliny's when reading these awesome HSFB Boards!... 🤣🍻

So in all fairness, what's your assessment of Lara and MD?....

Quote from: TheCompPoll on Nov 22, 2025, 04:49 PMThis is objectively incorrect. Mater Dei does not have a huge talent gap on teams like SJB and Sierra Canyon. I don't have MD's or Sierra Canyon's numbers off hand (though I have previously looked at both teams rosters this seasons in terms of CFB recruiting) but when I pulled the recruiting stats earlier this season, SJB had 33 players on their roster with FBS offers - 24 of which were 247 composite 3 stars or higher. There is no universe in which Mater Dei is "not even really close" when comparing their roster talent to teams like SJB and Sierra Canyon. I wouldn't be surprised if SJB had the better stats on paper (which makes the late season collapse even worse for this year's SJB team).

I don't know that this was Mater Dei's least talented team since 2016, but I (along with others who follow the local scene closely) have noticed this seemingly downward trend for Mater Dei. As one example, Mater Dei's Freshman team has forfeited the last two years against SJB. I agree with @TheOC89 and others that Lara was not the right coaching hire for the Monarchs and don't really see them being the juggernaut they were over the last decade with him. Sure, they will continue to be a dangerous and elite team, but probably not the world beaters they have been recently.

As I've said in previous seasons, eventually MD will have to either see a noticeable talent drop-off OR they will have to sacrifice some/many of the elements of the program that made it special in the first place. You can't try to construct a program with good students who are upstanding citizens, put the team first and respond well to coaching and then expect to also have the most physically dominant group of players. You can achieve that once or maybe even a few seasons (as they have), but it's impossible to sustain both every season. All of the top programs in the country face this challenge constantly to varying degrees.

And I watched his hudl from JSerra and he indeed can fly. MD probably should have taken advantage of that more. But, that would've involved more designed QB runs and some option plays. They might have wanted to run a more "pro" or "sophisticated" offense for brand management, marketing and recruiting. (it's nuts that I have to say this, but welcome to 2025)

Hopkins had a total of 136 rushing yards for the entire season at MD. He had 113 in one game (San Diego Lincoln) alone last year at JSerra.

I am sure his passing stats were terrible at JSerra last year as well.... If he couldn't complete 65% of his passes and throw for 30 or more TD's with all that talent at MD there is no way he will make it as a D1 QB.... He is the worst QB MD has had since in the last 10 years or maybe even since before Matt Barkley was there....

The fact MD has to settle for him really says something about The Raul Lara Affect... They are not attracting top QB's like they have historically....  And the fact that the Highly Touted Infererra Kid couldn't beat him out when he is a below average passer, means MD is in big trouble at the QB position where they have been the Gold Standard in So Cal....

I would think that Top QB's who want to play in Orange County will look to play for Carson Palmer at RSM where they can be developed and Mentored....

Inferrera was injured early in the season and had major knee surgery. The backup most of the season was a freshman.
