[1. Massillon]

Week one in the books and there were a number of impressive showings. Far too early to make any bold predictions about who will be taking the hardware home in December, but here's how I have it at the moment:

1. Massillon (1-0; beat Glenville 31-18) - the Tigers delivered in a marquee early season game after coming into this season with a lot of hype (and notable transfers). They outgained Glenville by 250 yards and only a kick return early in the second half kept this game close before Savior Owens ripped off a couple of 40 yard TD runs. Next: @ GlenOak on 8/28.

2. Bishop Watterson (1-0; beat Anthony Wayne 35-0) - now in D2, Watterson picked up where they left off last season with a dominating shutout of Anthony Wayne. AW is usually solid, but this week should tell us a lot more. Next: vs. Pick Central on 8/28.

3. Princeton (1-0; beat Moeller 31-24) - Princeton hit a number of explosive plays to erase an early deficit to Moeller in a statement win. Like Massillon, they had a bunch of big time transfers come in that delivered in this game. Next: @ Middletown on 8/28.

4. Elder (1-0; beat Middletown 35-3) - the Panthers lost some key players from last season that saw them finish with the first undefeated regular season in decades and make a regional final run. But they return one of the best signal callers in the state in Kaden Estep, and with Ramsey calling the plays they racked up nearly 400 yards of offense.  Next: @ Covington Catholic (KY) on 8/28/

5. Walsh Jesuit (1-0; beat Highland 34-0) - not sure if Highland is down this year, but they've been one of the best programs in D2 for a few years now and WJ dominated them while holding them to under 70 yards of offense. Big test this week as they play host to a talented Springfield team. Next: vs. Springfield on 8/28.

6. St. Edward (1-0; beat O-Liberty 15-12) - the Eagles needed a big fourth quarter drive and a fourth down stop on defense to put Liberty away, but they delivered. Signal caller Langston Lucas was a perfect 14-14 passing and ran in both of St. Edward's scores. Liberty is a well-coached program and should once again be a player in the Region 3 race as they have a tendency to get better as the year goes on. Next: vs. Canton McKinley on 8/28.

7. Moeller (0-1; lost to Princeton 31-24) - I'm not going to write off this Moeller team after a loss to a very talented Princeton team. They still have the dudes to finish the regular season strong and make a post-season run. Next: vs. Groveport-Madison on 8/28.

8. TCC (1-0; beat Trotwood-Madison 27-9) - I thought TCC looked good in their pre-season scrimmage with St. Edward and they opened with a nice win over an always solid Trotwood team. Now in D2 they will look to challenge Avon in Region 6. Next: vs. Portage Central (MI) on 8/27.

9. Lakota West (1-0; beat St. X 20-7) - really dominant defensive effort against X, highlighted by three interceptions. Can their offense muster enough against the likes of Princeton or other Region 4 contenders? We'll know a little more this week with an early season rivalry game against a Lakota East team that just put up 41 in their opener. Next: vs. Lakota East on 8/28.

10. Gahanna-Lincoln (1-0; beat Pick Central 35-3) - one of the more surprising results of the weekend. Not because GL won, but because of the final score. PC is too talented to get spanked by that much. Lots of groans about the coaching and preparedness. Next: vs. Springboro on 8/28.

Not sure what to make of NFL Academy. I know they played STA close last year and just handled Marietta (GA) last week (albeit across the pond).

Another game I forgot, TCC will host Portage Central (MI) tonight. PC was a final four team in Michigan D2 last year.
