Gaybob813 said Lakeland was a shit team when they lost to DLS, remember that thread?

I said Lakeland would probably be back in the State Championship game and here they are.

STA has had 4 knockouts in the Playoffs, hopefully Lakeland will punch back!

For old time's sake, since STA's only loss is to an 8-3 CA team who lost in the second round of the playoffs, and since Lakeland lost to DLS, FL's trophy belongs to CA this year.

But in all seriousness, go Lakeland!

I can't recall if I've mentioned it, but the QB Lakeland used to start the season- was committed to Arkansas of the SEC- left the program after returning from the DLS loss. They switched a WR/RB/KR to QB and, initally, I assumed he was just an option/wildcat guy and the passing game would go down the tubes. But, Kelin Hendrix has made the passing game BETTER. He was QB for winless Kathleen last season, and played behind what's been a mediocre OL this season, and yet has thrown 36 TD passes over those two seasons, while being an elite, elusive runner. Despite having the same supporting cast as earlier, the offense looks rather dramatically different. He'll make the occassional WTF? throw, but around those are some brilliant plays. He may well even have a future at QB at the next level. Regardless, he'll be the most impactful QB STA has ever seen from Lakeland. It's still going to be a slog for the offense vs. STA, but they at least now have some bite unlike last season following the injury to their best player.

A sign of these weird times: Lakeland has faced both of the QBs playing for the California Open Bowl title game. We know about the DLS game, but Lakeland beat Santa Margarita's QB (Trace Johnson) in the playoffs two years ago as well.

Watched bits and pieces early on. Someone needs to coach Lakeland players (I saw QB and others) that if you run 15 yards east to west (sideways) and then 1 yard north/south (forward) you still only gain 1 yard, not 16 Saw that several times. Holy crap put your head down and run forward. They actually had some early success in the Power I with 3 backs and running straight ahead. Not sire if they abounded that later.

What a frustrating, torturous experience it is watching the Lakeland offense  ::)

I do think they have a top tier defense, both talent and in the DC CJ Johnson. But, the OC, who is the head coach, is perhaps the worst in-game coach- as far as decisions made and plays called- that I've ever seen at any level. Case in point, towards the end of the first half STA faced a 3rd and 3- not 4th and 3 or 3rd and 13- and the coach calls a timeout with roughly two minutes to play in the half. This appeared to signal that he thought it was a foregone conclusion Lakelad would stop them...on 3rd and 3. Naturally, STA converts the 3rd down and then proceeds to push it and make a one score (6-0) game a two score (9-0) game. I thought that was CRUSHING to Lakeland. If they could've come out in the 2nd half with the ball and down one score, they could've been much more optimistic than they were being down two scores. (The coach did nearly the exact same thing vs. Edgewater, and the Eagles ended up missing a 50-yd FG before half.)

They've got to hire a competent OC ASAP. If they do, they can be a top 10-15 team nationally. If not, they'll be stuck as a second tier Florida team.
