Wow, was checking the score updates for this game while I was at the SJB/SFA game with Steeler. Sounds like a crazy game to go down 24-0 then bring it all the way back just to lose it in the end.
#19 Williams Field, AZ beat #12 Eastlake, WA 43-17 yesterday in the California Classic at San Juan Hills High School, CA.
John Curtis, La beat Cathedral, CA in the other game of the event.
Williams Field will play Basha next week. Probably be a blowout. Never know though

From my Coyotes' 6A bracket matchup:
- Mesa enters halftime up 20-14 and scores on their opening possession of the second half;
- Centennial scores 17 straight to take a 38-27 lead with 4 minutes left;
- Mesa scores and goes for two but is stopped. 38-33 with 3:16 left.
- Mesa recovers the onside kick and eventually scores with 52 seconds left. Two point attempt no good but they have the 39-38 lead.
- Centennial drives to the Mesa 30 but our sophomore quarterback makes a disastrous backward pass (fumble) to avoid the sack but offense still loses 15 yards. 4th and 25 from Mesa 47 with 17 seconds left.
-QB redeems himself as he finds his twin brother tight end at Mesa 2. Ball is spiked and the go-ahead field goal is good.
Centennial advances in the wildest game I've ever watched.
ONLY SCORE THAT MATTERS FROM LAST NIGHT:
Centennial 35, American Leadership Academy-Queen Creek 23
Coyotes get a shot at defending last year's Class 6A championship against Casteel and will be ending their season at Sun Devil Stadium for a third straight season.
Pending tonight's Open semifinals there have been 14 games (out of 36) across the Open-6A-5A brackets decided by one score or fewer; 11 have been by more than three touchdowns, with the rest falling between nine and 17 points. I'm still an advocate of the state needing to have four distinct 32-team classifications for the state's largest schools (i.e. the implication of a Class 7A) but the relative parity during these playoffs likely points to another year under the current model (24-team 4A/5A brackets and 20 team semi-combined Open/6A bracket).

Colts have some good pieces on both sides of the ball back next season so it'll be interesting to see if they can make the next step and challenge the Big Three they share a district with. 6A and Open champs guaranteed to be from the Chandler District.

They're both schools with over 2000 kids and almost exclusively play schools with at least 1700 schools in football. Both have produced some individual studs over the years in football, in basketball one or two great athletes goes a lot further than the gridiron.
I guess you have to be from Arizona to be up on Sunnyslope football and Millennium football.
I've never heard those 2 teams mentioned once on any football forum I've ever posted on going back quite a few years.
Evidently they must be pretty good at basketball..... and the football powers in Arizona must just be OK sometimes in basketball.

Good stuff. I would put AZ's top 10 against any top 10 outside the big 4 states and that includes Ohio, PA, TN etc. not saying they would clean up, but I would expect them to be right there in the thick of things. AZ is in that next group after CA, TX, GA and FL.
Centennial v. Servite now official https://x.com/Coach_ATaylor/status/2027012761197465809?s=20
Coyotes aren't going to be able to match Servite's godly speed but have a ton back on defense and a good deal back on offense. Offer sheets are in Servite's favor but not in an overly lopsided way at this point so this has the makings of a decent matchup.

And like most states those 4-5 teams fight each other every offseason for what little talent is available.

Rolling with what the facts are and not rumors:
1200-student school promoted to Arizona's highest classification and see their popular, well-connected coach head for the college ranks before second season in the new conference. Get through that season wobbly but win the 6A title, then see the new coach leave and emails leaked where the principal complains about music with the n-word (she didn't censor it) playing in the weight room. Floodgates then open for what talent remained from the original regime to find greener pastures, and throughout all of this there's a steady exodus of experienced assistant coaches away from the program.
With respect to this specific situation, administration hired a championship-winning coach but didn't properly vet him in advance. Also have a lot of budget questions and decisions hanging over this so in general it's a mess. (https://x.com/KevinMcCabe987/status/2030306909786701903?s=20)

Compass Prep full schedule and at this point it seems like utter suicide. (https://x.com/azcompassfb/status/2036121851869667529?s=20) Only three home games and four games overall in the state of Arizona, two week long road trip to Odessa and three proper academy teams on the slate including SFA.
Compass is not an AIA member thus our standard transfer rules do not apply so in theory they **COULD** recruit up a more legitimate travel team in the next six months (Saguaro's kicker has transferred there per social media and with how that situation seems to be deteriorating it wouldn't shock me if we see an exodus from there) but it would be very deviation from the kids that normally transfer there (guys avoiding the AIA's one year sit rule after a second transfer).

It's teacher's salary along with a small stipend. Nobody gets rich coaching out here.

Brophy wasn't bad last year. It seems they can never win the big games and tend to get outmuscled and beaten in the trenches in those games. Bunch of WR's is great, but they don't block.

Pretty confident this is the first time (https://x.com/MaxPreps/status/2076736398929870864?s=20) three Arizona teams are ranked in any preseason top 25, and I don't think it's terribly uncalled for.
Not the worst preseason poll I have seen. Some questions on the GA teams, but not too bad. Missing a couple of Cali schools but we will see some change to it before the season kicks off.

I think in reality the three Arizona teams are more likely top 35 teams but I think there's legit arguments for all three to be where they are.
Add Liberty to give us four in the top 100 (https://x.com/therealbeadle/status/2077454619282907620?s=20).
I think there's 4-5 teams aside from this group with as much or more talent than Liberty but there's a level of safety with the Lions that isn't there for those other squads.
Desert Edge is absolutely (https://247sports.com/season/2027-football/recruits/?&PlayerSport.PlayerInstitution.Institution.Key=6640&RecruitInterests.Offered=True) loaded (https://247sports.com/season/2028-football/recruits/?&PlayerSport.PlayerInstitution.Institution.Key=6640&RecruitInterests.Offered=True) but might not even have a top 500 schedule.

Those four have consistently been the strongest in AZ (along with Cen10 every few years). The top 3 ALL in the top 25, though? How does Brophy look this year?
They have 5 teams from TN in the top 100. Not completely sold on BGA just yet. I think their ranking is a bit too high. They need to earn it first. Problem is, they play in the weaker of the private divisions. Not many chances to prove it. They do play Milton,GA this year. Could be a good game, although it's not the usual Milton powerhouse.

IMO Basha and Hamilton are slam-dunks for national top 25 honors; Basha has some dudes coming back after winning the Open last year, and I think a lot of people forget how hard Hamilton was dealing before their QB1 went down in the first Chandler game. QB is back, as are a lot of other pieces from the only team to take out Basha last season.
Chandler is the "weakest" of those three and have a red flag here and there (i.e. their top RB transferred to Liberty) but think Maxpreps is giving them a bump based on having a five-star QB.
Centennial has more talent than Liberty this season but they've made it difficult to trust them year to year. Their schedule is a lot tougher than last season's and I would not be shocked with anything between 5-5 and 8-2.
I think Brophy's best shot at contention was 2024 when they had a good collection of D1 prospects on the o-line and the NFL kids. With the younger Fitzgerald transferring to Minnesota this is probably a rebuilding year for the Broncos.
Aside from the already mentioned Casteel is another one of the more likely squads to contend this year.
USA Today (https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/high-school/football/2026/07/21/national-high-school-football-rankings-preseason/90870825007/?taid=6a5fdde64bd5dd000191530e) starting the year with the Chandler trio in their Super 25.
Unfortunate circumstances have precipitated a game relevant to the national eight-man scene (https://x.com/JavierJMorales/status/2080516126640140745?s=20).
For context, despite what the name would indicate St. David is not a private school but rather a small Mormon community in southern Arizona. They're pretty consistently successful in our eight-man ranks, though they haven't won a title since the late nineties. Mancos appears to be Colorado's 2023 eight-man champion.

Maxpreps AZ Top 15 (https://x.com/MaxPreps/status/2084387299144421790?s=20), my opinions below:
- Brophy, Mountain View, Queen Creek and Horizon are rated too high;
- Desert Mounain and Casteel are ranked too low;
- Since the advent of the Open there has not been a Class 5A or 4A team ranked in the state's end of season top five that hasn't qualified for the Open bracket. Since qualifying for the Open is no longer a thing for those smaller schools Desert Edge is not finishing that high.

Heard some details about QC's hiring their new coach. The Mormon Mafia played its part 🤣.
I've long held the belief that that the secret primary motivator for the implementation of the Open was to get the "destination" schools out of the mix so that the LDS community schools could sweep up the other titles.

Guy has D1 size and the previous two Basha QBs are at Power 4 schools. Those things being what they are, there's a reason Princeton is the best opportunity for him (he doesn't have FBS arm talent).
My buddy that graduated from Basha was apoplectic that they were as vanilla on offense as what they were (i.e. seemed to be cycling through the same three plays) but their D was successful in ball-hawking Chandler into submission. Not a bad product for the state to roll out on the national stage to start the year.

Wow, what's the reason for the decline of that program?
Quote from: TheCompPoll on Sep 01, 2026, 09:10 AMWow, what's the reason for the decline of that program?
- when Mohns left they had a continuous line of succession that was easily traced back to their 2006 championship; Mike Reardon was that team's HC, his DC John Sanders took over when he left and Mohns was his OC before taking over. They went away from that line of succession when they replaced Mohns with Zach Hill and followed his departure with the hiring of a guy that had only briefly been with the program. Those last two moves came with a ton of decorated, long-time assistants leaving the program.
- a few kids left after Mohns did but nothing crazy. When Hill left an email from the school principal lamenting the football team's affinity for "n-word music" was leaked and the floodgates opened. This past year the AD was forced out when screenshots of him having an inappropriate conversation with a middle schooler went public, and it took the admin 72 years to finally settle on the old Bellevue coach as the next HC. Yeah.
Saguaro was never supposed to be as successful as what they were. With 1200 students they are small for even a 4A school and but got around that with really strong ties to the community and the ability to leverage their success to draw kids away from larger schools nearby (and sometimes not so nearby). This pissed off a lot of people and that's largely why we 1) now have our Open playoffs; and 2) a promotion/relegation system for realignment. Now that they are 6A it's not possible for them to maintain that success without a ton of out of area kids.

Theme for the week out here is "Arizona versus Everybody" as nine of our top 20 teams (per Maxpreps) have OOS tilts this weekend. My picks in caps, and possibly some commentary on a couple of these:
BASHA @ Orange Lutheran
Vegas Arbor View @ HAMILTON
Cathedral Catholic @ CHANDLER
Corner Canyon @ LIBERTY - I'm going to roll with the home team getting vengeance in an upset, I think the Lions had sufficient growing pains versus Mesa to roll the dice
Lake Oswego @ CASTEEL
HIGLEY @ Dakota Ridge (CO) - if the Knights can avoid a repeat of Queen Creek's 350-yard passing performance in their opener I like them on the road
INGLEWOOD @ Highland
PERRY @ Vegas Centennial
PEORIA CENTENNIAL @ Servite - of course I'm taking my guys, though I have looked up every buffet in Anaheim so I can stay out of the way of the hosses on Servite's line. I want no trouble from any of those young men.
I do think this would be a best-case scenario for Arizona here, realistically though I think five wins is in-play for the week. 2-0 against the Trinity League would be earth-shattering but is probably a pipe dream; hopefully Basha has a good trip and is recovers nicely to finish their season strong 😂

I was on local boards for 20 years and never participated in any Pick 'Em until 2020 and COVID forced me to stay home on Fridays. I won the whole thing on my local board that year and proved I was only sparing everyone else sitting out before then 😂
With Pick 'Em I recognize I go off vibes way more than what I should. Long-form stuff forces me to at least attempt to attach some logic to things.
If I were forced to attach confidence points to these games it'd look like this:
Hamilton 9
Inglewood 8
Perry 7
Chandler 6
Peoria Centennial 5
Liberty 4
Casteel 3
Higley 2
Basha 1
...and even then I'll acknowledge that I'm really trying hard to wish #5 into existence.

Really??? Wow. They used to be one of the top dawgs in AZ.
Centennial receives kickoff and get out to midfield first three plays. QB gets picked and Servite takes over just on their side of field.
Centennial stops Friars on 4th and 1. Zeros in first.
Zeros after one. Servite driving around midfield.
Jordan Wells houses the punt return, Friars up 7-0 with 9:55 left in second.
Hill twins connect on a 68-yard scoring strike, bad snap on the PAT. 7-6 Servite.
Centennial gets down inside Servite 30, QB picked on 3rd and 17. 2:47 in half.
...and Centennial responds by forcing the fumble on 3rd and 1.
Coyotes get a couple firsts and score on a fade from the 3, Centennial leads 13-7 @ half.

Chandler 42, Cathedral 13
Perry 55, Vegas Centennial 14

I tried to avoid it this time by getting a steak and egg burrito before leaving Phoenix on Thursday morning but failed to communicate my intentions with the rest of my travel party so while we were rolling through Quartzsite and I was perfectly comfortable to make the rest of the trip on sunflower seeds everyone else got hungry. Obviously a lot to unpack related to Basha and that can wait until tomorrow.
One of the things you can unpack is if Basha is the #31 team in the nation per "your MaxPreps" 6 or 7 Louisiana teams are getting shafted.
I guess my man woody still trying to sort it all out.

Strange looking football to me.
Going back to the opener against Chandler the sentiment on here was that Basha "looked" the part but 1) their QB is mid; 2) they cycle through the same 3-4 plays; and 3) their defense bailed them out that night by forcing a good number of Chandler turnovers. The two teams put together an entertaining enough product for ESPN that night but it was stereotypical early season football.
Jump ahead two weeks and those issues appear to be more systemic versus early season hiccups. They did play without their Texas-bound running back and Pinnacle is a very good program in their own right but at some point the offer sheets and hype need to be justified. You are what your record says you are.
The good news for Basha is they have more than two months to get right. Considering the state's success OOS this year a Basha repeat would still make the biggest Arizona regular season upset in 22 years little more than a blip with regard to national perception.
I don't know about any of that stuff. I'm not supposed to know any of that.

I'm not interested in providing excuses as to why your uninformed expectations of Basha were unfulfilled.
There were multiple (https://forum.thecomppoll.com/index.php?topic=62.150) posts (https://forum.thecomppoll.com/index.php?topic=62.165) on this very thread that raised concerns about Basha during their game with Chandler. If you missed those you have no one to blame but yourself and frankly have no business speaking on the matter.
Your knowledge of Basha is they have a bunch of kids with glorious offer sheets and as such should dunk on the rest of the state on that alone. I've pointed out to you that in practice this is a stupid opinion to have (https://forum.thecomppoll.com/index.php?topic=365.msg7611#msg7611). It's also rich that the same guy who (poorly) champions the depth of quality teams in Louisiana is oblivious when an actual example of a state's depth is put on display (i.e. the supposed 15th-best team in Arizona completely picked apart a team that just played a Trinity League team that should be undefeated to a near-standstill). You'll scream about Basha being the only good team in Arizona then act bewildered when the only good team in Arizona loses by five scores in-state.
Basha got their ass whooped by a Pinnacle 40-7. I watched the last part of that disaster

That La Cueva team had 4 seniors sign with D1 programs (https://247sports.com/season/2025-football/recruits/?&PlayerSport.PlayerInstitution.Institution.Key=15817&RecruitInterestEvents.Type=6), including a four star quarterback and linebacker. Two of their top receivers ran on a 4×100 relay team that put down a 41.45, and a third member of that relay team was a critical part of La Cueva's secondary (he ran a 10.5 100-meter as a senior last year, while one of those receivers ran a 10.4). Pinnacle was the only team to come within 21 of La Cueva before their state championship game loss to Cleveland.
If Pinnacle would running clock 300 teams from Louisiana, that La Cueva team would running clock 305.
Keep coming at me bitch.
Louisiana probably has 200 Pinnacle's.
Texas probably has 1200 Pinnacle's
Pinnacle is currently 8th in Arizona. Last year the 8th ranked Arizona team was ranked 159th nationally.
You know who was 160th nationally? Baton Rouge Catholic. They finished 4th in Louisiana. And that's after losing to some MAIS League Mississippi team.
There is 310 teams in Lousiana.
So in conclusion, there is only about 3 "Pinnacles" in Louisiana.
Pinnacle would beat the pine tar out of roughly 307 Lousiana teams.

Of course you have to resort to lying. I never said Pinnacle would running clock every team in Louisiana, as I'm confident that the Boot State's top ten could keep it close.
Pinnacle's finished in Arizona's top 20 12 times since 2011 (seven of those were top ten placements); during that stretch they've sent two QBs to the NFL, and another two to D1 programs (a fifth D1 QB - Utah's Devon Dampier - played his frosh and soph seasons at Pinnacle before transferring to Saguaro). They have a 4-3 record all-time in OOS losses, with all three losses coming by seven points or less against a Trinity League foe, a Geico Bowl participant, and the aforementioned La Cueva team. Had the same coach since 2003 and with over 2500 students from a high-socioeconomic community are the unquestioned jewel of north Phoenix's Paradise Valley School District. The only reason Pinnacle isn't known as a national brand is they've been routinely out-gunned by the likes of Chandler, Liberty, Centennial, Brock Purdy's Perry squads and Bijan Robinson's senior year squad at Salpointe.
Most high schoolers can only aspire to Pinnacle's brand of "average".

Salpointe played seven games against teams Maxpreps had ranked ahead of them and went 1-6 in those games. Do you understand that when you play teams better than you that most of the time you lose?
(It's hysterical that you attempt to shit on Maxpreps while giving a shout-out to a team that exemplifies how accurate their rankings can be.)
Since 2019 Arizona's alignment model has given very little consideration to geography and even enrollment. That's how Salpointe - a Catholic school of 1200 kids - became the only school from Tucson in Arizona's 6A ranks (that's important because Salpointe is 17-1 against other Tucson schools since 2020 and would be a perennial 8-10 win regular season team that doesn't get tested until the playoffs). When they were playing more commiserate with their geography/enrollment, they played in four championship games from 2013 to 2023, winning our D-2 title during an undefeated 2013 campaign that saw them notch two 40-point OOS wins over Vegas Liberty and Encino Crespi (they're 6-1 in OOS games since 2009). They were a ten-win team as recently as 2023, are one of only three Arizona teams to play Liberty within two touchdowns since 2022, and as mentioned earlier their recent alums include the highest paid running back in NFL history.

Arizona high school football is very similar to their State Animal > The Ringtail
The Ringtail weighs a Pound on a good day and looks like a wannabe raccoon thing
The Arizona State Animal is very similar to the Arizona State people........ both very strange!
