From my Coyotes' 6A bracket matchup:

- Mesa enters halftime up 20-14 and scores on their opening possession of the second half;

- Centennial scores 17 straight to take a 38-27 lead with 4 minutes left;

- Mesa scores and goes for two but is stopped. 38-33 with 3:16 left.

- Mesa recovers the onside kick and eventually scores with 52 seconds left. Two point attempt no good but they have the 39-38 lead.

- Centennial drives to the Mesa 30 but our sophomore quarterback makes a disastrous backward pass (fumble) to avoid the sack but offense still loses 15 yards. 4th and 25 from Mesa 47 with 17 seconds left.

-QB redeems himself as he finds his twin brother tight end at Mesa 2. Ball is spiked and the go-ahead field goal is good.

Centennial advances in the wildest game I've ever watched.

ONLY SCORE THAT MATTERS FROM LAST NIGHT:

Centennial 35, American Leadership Academy-Queen Creek 23

Coyotes get a shot at defending last year's Class 6A championship against Casteel and will be ending their season at Sun Devil Stadium for a third straight season.

Pending tonight's Open semifinals there have been 14 games (out of 36) across the Open-6A-5A brackets decided by one score or fewer; 11 have been by more than three touchdowns, with the rest falling between nine and 17 points. I'm still an advocate of the state needing to have four distinct 32-team classifications for the state's largest schools (i.e. the implication of a Class 7A) but the relative parity during these playoffs likely points to another year under the current model (24-team 4A/5A brackets and 20 team semi-combined Open/6A bracket).

Complete ass-beating by Casteel in the 6A title game. My Coyotes' D just couldn't seem to find a solution to junior QB Tee Smith of Casteel. Colts have some good pieces on both sides of the ball back next season so it'll be interesting to see if they can make the next step and challenge the Big Three they share a district with. 6A and Open champs guaranteed to be from the Chandler District.

Millennium and Sunnyslope are thought as the top two teams in the state but St. Mary's is well-regarded. Their power forward is a five-star recruit that's headed for Duke.

Yeah, MaxPreps has St Mary's #3 in Arizona behind those 2 teams you mentioned.

Right, St Mary's 6-11 Cameron Williams #1 Power Forward in the country in the 2026 class headed to Duke.
https://247sports.com/player/cameron-williams-46142153/

Ruston is led by 6-7 Power Forward Ahmad Hudson.
He's the #3 rated Power Forward in the 2027 class.
Ahmad Hudson is a 5* in football and basketball. That doesn't happen very often.
He's also the #1 ranked TE in the nation in the 2027 class.

I bet that was a good Champ game with those 2 facing each other.

Good for Ruston. They are definitely a threat in Louisiana 5A Public.

They both have football teams, but evidently they play small schools and are in a smaller class.

They're both schools with over 2000 kids and almost exclusively play schools with at least 1700 schools in football. Both have produced some individual studs over the years in football, in basketball one or two great athletes goes a lot further than the gridiron.

I guess you have to be from Arizona to be up on Sunnyslope football and Millennium football.

I've never heard those 2 teams mentioned once on any football forum I've ever posted on going back quite a few years.

Evidently they must be pretty good at basketball..... and the football powers in Arizona must just be OK sometimes in basketball.

Good stuff. I would put AZ's top 10 against any top 10 outside the big 4 states and that includes Ohio, PA, TN etc. not saying they would clean up, but I would expect them to be right there in the thick of things. AZ is in that next group after CA, TX, GA and FL.

Centennial v. Servite now official https://x.com/Coach_ATaylor/status/2027012761197465809?s=20

Coyotes aren't going to be able to match Servite's godly speed but have a ton back on defense and a good deal back on offense. Offer sheets are in Servite's favor but not in an overly lopsided way at this point so this has the makings of a decent matchup.

I just checked them out. Crazy that they were 21st in AZ and top 350 nationally. And add Heritage behind them, and you have 22 teams in the top 350.

For comparison, Louisiana only has 10 in the top 350. And there are about 100 more Lousiana threads here. Arizona needs to start getting some love

Louisiana had 15 teams in the Top 300 at HSFA which is truly amazing.

Arizona had a measly 4.

https://highschoolfootballamerica.com/final-2025-high-school-football-america-300-national-rankings/

Everyone knows outside of 4-5 teams Arizona football is pretty terrible.
And like most states those 4-5 teams fight each other every offseason for what little talent is available.

As a whole just too much desert.

AZ Compass Prep playing four OOS games next season[/url

Compass plays in the Canyon Athletic Association (alternative to the major governing body here the AIA) and has dominated that division (mostly small charter schools) the past two seasons. They do have a national-select basketball team that competes with the Montverdes of the world and the prevailing school of thought is their goal is to be the IMG of the West Coast. They aren't there yet and really don't know what the Odessa schools get out of these matchups. (https://x.com/therealbeadle/status/2027537176523903239?s=20)

...and I realize one of those games is SFA.

Unless AZCP is poaching an all-star team these are bloodbaths in the making.

Not so fast my friend. (https://x.com/therealbeadle/status/2030058870526333435?s=20)  A lot of tabloid-style rumors flying around this one but one certainty is that the Saguaro position is open once again.

What's the deal over there?

Rolling with what the facts are and not rumors:

1200-student school promoted to Arizona's highest classification and see their popular, well-connected coach head for the college ranks before second season in the new conference. Get through that season wobbly but win the 6A title, then see the new coach leave and emails leaked where the principal complains about music with the n-word (she didn't censor it) playing in the weight room. Floodgates then open for what talent remained from the original regime to find greener pastures, and throughout all of this there's a steady exodus of experienced assistant coaches away from the program.

With respect to this specific situation, administration hired a championship-winning coach but didn't properly vet him in advance. Also have a lot of budget questions and decisions hanging over this so in general it's a mess. (https://x.com/KevinMcCabe987/status/2030306909786701903?s=20)
